Ricky had a great beginning to the season. His endurance was up and he wanted to win. He even qualified for a few invitationals. As we got later in the season it almost seemed like he was just going through the motions. His starts were great and fast, but as soon as his leg started hurting he slowed down and didn't push through it. It's frustrating because there is A LOT of time put into this sport. The last meet before his last 2 heats I had a talk with him. He did amazing his last 2 races. He beat his time by 3 seconds on the breast and shaved a few .10ths of seconds of his freestyle seed time (by my timing).
The most exciting part was seeing the fire back in him and the drive, especially his face when he knew he did great and didn't let a little burn in the leg stop him, but worked through it and kept kicking fast. Him getting that feeling of achievement through preserverence.
Since we literally sit under a tent all day in the heat, we have made some great friends. Makes it all worth it.
Slow or fast he was the only child on the diving block who seeked me out and blew me a kiss before every race. Melts my heart.
Next year will be great and a lot more exciting because Hana will also be swimming.
